Spring and summer are traditionally thought of as the busiest times in real estate. For-sale signs crop up like daffodils on lawns across the country. But buying or selling a home during the autumn and into winter can carry many advantages, too.

After all, people are always moving and deciding to buy or sell, no matter what season it is. The National Association of Realtors has found that fall is the best time to purchase a home. Sellers during this time may be weary if their homes have been on the market since summer and willing to take an offer. 

“Homes sell every month of the year,” said Gary Scott of Long and Foster. “I continue to think fall is the greatest time to sell, and that means it’s also a good time to buy.”

In recognition of National Kitchen and Bath Month—celebrated this month, our October checklist provides helpful maintenance tips for those two rooms—both of which are often considered the most important in a home.

Get your kitchen ready for holiday cooking and entertaining.

Refrigerator. Use a vacuum or a bendable coil cleaning brush to remove dust, pet hair and cobwebs that catch in the coils located under and behind your refrigerator. Clogged coils can cause the compressor to work harder and longer, using more energy and shortening the life of your refrigerator.

Exhaust fan. Remove the exhaust fan filters from above your range and put them in the dishwasher to clean all the grease that have collected in them from cooking.
